“This loss of the sense of the majesty of God was accompanied, continued Tozer, with the ‘further loss of religious awe and consciousness of the divine Presence. We have lost our spirit of worship and our ability to withdraw inwardly to meet God in adoring silence… It is impossible to keep our moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate.'”
That passage was John Jefferson Davis quoting A.W. Tozer in his new book “Worship and the Reality of God: An Evangelical Theology of Real Presence.
Unfortunately I think Tozer was right when he made these statements about the status of the church. He said these things in 1961 and they have only continued to worsen.
Here is our challenge for today. Think about your ability to “withdraw inwardly to meed God in adoring silence.” Does even the idea of that sound boring to you? What is your perception of God like? Is it awe inspiring or dulled. The truth is that the God who created the universe and holds it together with his power; the God who created you and gave Jesus to the cross for you dwells inside of you, walks with you always. If you are a believer, if you follow Christ, these things are true! Attempt to do just what Tozer said in the quote above today. Withdraw inwardly and meet God today in adoring silence. Sit with him a while. Sing to him. Let him love you.
